All day under my canopy in the winds...

.... at the end of a very long day of work.

The work tent can just be seen silhouetted against the far horizon.

Rock supports, bags of sand and lots of rope tied all the tables, chairs and canopy to the sage country all around me.... the hot and cold winds were often quite strong and blew in different directions all day long.

I've known Barb since 1998. She (plus her late husband, relatives and other friends) has befriended me in countless ways, making my artwork and shrub-steppe-centric video/audio recordings and programs possible.

This panorama shows my blind and video camera during an early morning moonrise. Having gotten into position long before sunrise, I had just finished making field recordings of a Rock Wren at its favorite singing perch. The shots are featured in my program "The Vanishing Shrub-steppe" on this website.

My favorite columnar basalt cliffs, a boundless source of inspiration.

This particular section of cliff has many stunning, anthropomorphic columnar basalt "figures" that metamorphose all day with the changing light (which can make drawing and painting a challenge!).

The multi-directional winds would whip the cloth canopy all day with the snapping sounds and aural violence of a three-master in a storm at sea.

Shrub-steppe, Plein Air

These photos give you a sense of the remoteness of this area as well as the immensity which surrounded me all day long as I worked.

I never drew from Photographs in the shrub-steppe (or at Deception Pass); all work was done en plein air. However, I DID dream of one day creating a miniature version of my favorite sections of columnar basalt (The Elders) in high-fired clay as a 3-dimensional tribute to a beloved sculptural world that I learned to honor in 2-dimensional drawings and paintings.

At the end of a long work day, I would stay in a semi-abandoned ranch house kindly loaned to me by Mike Zimbelman. It had belonged to his grandparents (his parents had grown up there).
